Tower of London is located on the north bank of the Thames and is the fortress of the City of London. The tower was erected under the name White Tower in 1076 under the reign of William I the Conqueror. After the Fire of London in 1666, the tower was renovated and extended, receiving two sets of fortifications of at least 12 towers. The most famous of which is the Bloody Tower, where King Edward V and his brother Richard the Plantagenet were killed in 1483. The tower became the royal residence from the 13th century until the time of Elizabeth, when it became a state prison. Among others, Anne Boleyn and Catherine Howard were executed here. Today the tower is a museum housing a large collection of arms and armour and the crown jewels.
Tower Bridge
Tower Bridge is London's most famous bridge. Built at the end of the 19th century, it is a typical example of futuristic Victorian engineering. It consists of two large towers topped by spires and connected by a high covered walkway, which support the actual bridge that rises when large ships pass and on other special occasions. The old mechanical lifting system of the bridge has now been replaced by an electric one. From the top of the covered walkway between the towers there is a splendid view of the Thames and the city.
