The Round Tower was built around 1418 to defend the entrance to Portsmouth Harbour and prevent raids on the city by French ships. It was part of the city's defenses until 1960.
The Round Tower is part of an exciting new development in Old Portsmouth, with the Hotwalls Studios providing a new home for artistic talent in the city. The tower itself has undergone extensive renovation and development work to transform the old arches into modern art spaces.
There is a brand new cafe on site called The Canteen where visitors can enjoy spectacular views of the Solent while having coffee and gluten-free snacks. The top of the tower is open throughout the year for visitors to enjoy great sea and city views.
The Round Tower is used intermittently as an art gallery, with plans in place for it to host events more frequently. Visitors can also take part in the ever-evolving program of events and exhibitions at the tower.
