User FAQs

The Country Park has approximately 321 acres of open parkland, woodland, more formal historical gardens, feeding stations, lakeside walk, and a Local Nature Reserve. Visitors can enjoy walking, cycling, horse riding, bird watching, picnicking, kite flying, photography, and exploring the park and nature reserve.

Within the estate, visitors can find structures such as the golden gates, Moorish temple, and ha-ha wall, which provide a fascinating glimpse of the past. The gardens are also renowned for their rockwork structures and fine examples of topiary.

The gothic revival masterpiece at the heart of the estate was designed by James Wyatt in the early 1800s for the third Earl of Harrington. The original house dates back to 1633. The castle became home to the Stanhope family until it was sold in 1968. The estate was purchased by the Derby Corporation in 1969 and opened as one of the first country parks in England in 1970.

Visitors are advised to take extra care as the wildlife may be less accustomed to public presence and might be found closer to the paths. It is recommended to wash yourself and your clothing thoroughly if you've been in close contact with wild birds to reduce the spread of disease.

The entrance and only car park for visitors arriving in vehicles is off Borrowash Road between Borrowash Village and Thulston. Visitors can follow the brown tourist signs from either direction to reach the park. Car parking charges apply unless you are a blue badge holder. Season tickets can be purchased for convenient access to the park and other Derbyshire countryside sites.
