The art gallery is home to one of the finest collections in the country, spanning 700 years and including a staggering range of works by local, national, and international artists, designers, and makers. Highlights include works by renowned artists such as Joan Eardley, the Scottish Colourists, Francis Bacon, Tracey Emin, Claude Monet, and Barbara Hepworth.
The art gallery was opened in 1885 and was designed in the neo-classical style by Alexander Marshall Mackenzie.
Between 2015 and 2019, the art gallery underwent a landmark redevelopment supported by Aberdeen City Council and the National Lottery Heritage Fund. The redevelopment was led by Hoskins Architects and resulted in more treasures on display and vastly improved visitor facilities.
